Nursing Homes week was celebrated in earnest by St Elizabeth's Nursing Home residents, staff and families. In St Elizabeth's Nursing Home we believe that life is for living and we need to make the most of every day – no matter what age we are or where we live. Nursing Homes week was another excuse to have some special celebrations.
Monday – residents and staff participated in their usual day and made plans for the rest of the week. At the management team meeting additional hours for the activities co-ordinators was sanctioned to facilitate a change in our model of care from a medical / nursing / physical model to a social and recreational model of care.
Tuesday – residents enjoyed a movie night. The movie was called “Shall we Dance” starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. It was a black and white movie produced in 1937. 20 residents attended manmade cinema whereby the dining room was transformed. The residents enjoyed crisps and marshmallows throughout the movie.
Wednesday – residents enjoyed music with David. Residents and staff enjoyed singing and dancing on Wednesday afternoon with David playing his guitar and singing favourite tunes. The afternoon was enhanced by the great weather when the sitting room doors were opened onto the decking.
Thursday – residents attended the Alzheimers Support Group summer BBQ in the Darnley Hotel. Flexibus transported 20 residents and staff to the Darnley Hotel where a delicious BBQ was enjoyed by all. A specially textured menu was easily provided for some residents who needed a particular diet. An afternoon of music and dancing was enjoyed by residents and staff before returning to St Elizabeth's Nursing Home.
Friday – was a rest day with usual activities in St Elizabeth's with many residents sitting in the garden to top up with Vitamin D from the beautiful sunshine. Long may it last!
Saturday – saw the organisation of a family games day for residents. Children and grandchildren of staff and residents were invited to St Elizabeths for an afternoon of fun and games. 12 enthusiastic children joined residents to play cards and boardgames. The children were aged 2 years to 12 years. There was great excitement and loud shouts of achievements could be heard from the winners.
Sunday – again the great weather saw many families visiting and taking residents out for the afternoon. Other residents sat in the garden with suncream and sun hats soaking up the sunshine.
